      THE ABRAHAM GRAFFIS FAMILY RECORD
Pennsylvania, Fairfield and Hocking Counties, Ohio
Contributed by Mrs. L.T. Francis, Fort Worth, TX

Abraham Graffis Sr. was the son of Nicholas Graffis, who took
French leave from his home in Pennsylvania, coming down the Ohio River in a
flat boat to Maysville, Ky., from whence he made his way on foot to
Fairfield County, Ohio about 1804. He returned to Pennsylvania and married
Frances Gray and again emigrated to Ohio arriving in 1811 and settled near
Rush Creek Township, Fairfield County, Ohio.
He was unable to make the payments on this land and sold his
improvements for enough to buy another quarter section, which he did in
1812. Afterwards he rented his land and returned to Pennsylvania and in
1822, a third time he turned his face Ohioward.
This time his ventures proved successful and he acquired land in
both Fairfield and Hocking Counties, giving to each of his six children
farm lands in Hocking County with the exception of his son Abraham Graffis
Jr., who inherited the family homestead in Fairfield County.

      THE FRANKS FAMILY
Contributed by Harley Franks, Lansing, MI

Henry Franks Sr. was one of the soldiers under Col. Crawford, in
his campaign against the Indians in 1782. In May they started from near the
Ohio River with a force of 500 men for the Indian Territory, in the
wilderness of Ohio (Central), and in June were attacked and defeated by
1,150 savages near Upper Sandusky, Wyandot County. During the disorderly
retreat that followed Col. Crawford was captured by the Indians and a few
days later was burnt to death at the stake. Capt. Pipe, a prominent
Delaware Chief and Simon Girty, a notorious renegade, were the principal
actors. Henry Franks was captured at the same time and witnessed the cruel
torture of his unfortunate commander whom the Indians burnt, they said,
"for the massacre of their people at the Moravian towns on the Muskingum."
Franks was made to run the "Gauntlet" in a nude state, between two lines of
savages, who from both sides mercilessly beat him with fists and clubs,
hoping to disable him. Through these opposing ranks by energy and endurance
he successfully fought his way in the race for life; near the end of the
line seizing a stalwart savage by the throat and was strangling the life
out of him when he was pulled off by the other Indians who patted him on
the back saying "you make good injun", and from that time on his life was
spared. Later he made his escape and lived and died in Doylestown, Wayne
      County, Ohio.
Henry Franks applied for Pension before the Court at Wooster, Ohio,
September 3, 1832, Pension #20182, as a resident of township of Chippewa,
Wayne Co., Ohio; aged sixty-nine years. Stated that he was drafter in
German Twp., Fayette Co., Pa., June 29, 1781, under Capt. Catt and Lt.
Malikia Baker --that Col. Loughry was killed and Capt. Thomas Stokeley and
Malekia Baker were taken prisoners at the same time. Henry Franks was
adopted by the TUTON KAU SAW (The Bone of a Bear) Indians. Later he was
taken into the possession of the British Troops at Detroit in company with
Jacob Lawrence and George Mason. He arrived at his home in Fayette Co.,
Pa., the Spring of 1783, after being released.
Henry Franks died May 5th, 1836 and his widow applied for a Widows Pension.

Fayette County, Pa. was the home of the Franks family. In the early
part of the 1800's, Jonathan Franks moved to Hopewell Twp., Perry County,
Ohio. In 1825 Rezin Franks came west and settled in Thorn Twp., Perry Co.,
Ohio. Another brother, Peter Franks, settled in Wayne Co., Ohio and Solomon
Franks remained on the old farm in Penna.

      AN EARLY FRANKS OBITUARY
      MRS. BARBARA BRANDBERY FRANKS
Died at her home in German Twp., Fayette Co., Pa. on Sabbath
morning, the 12th day of October, 1839, Mrs. Barbara Franks in the 98th
year of her age. The deceased was born in Germany, A.D. 1741, and came to
America in 1754 in company with her father, Conrad Brandbery and family,
who were in indigent circumstances. She was sold as a servant to pay the
passage, to a Mr. Miller of Maryland, who treated his servants as he did
his slaves, with a great deal of severity. At length the days of her
jubilee arrived and she married Jacob Franks. Then they emigrated to
Western Pa. and settled on the waters of Browns Run in Fayette Co., Pa. In
the forest with no other covering save the arch blue sky, adorned in the
evening with the twinkling stars, such place by care and industry
afterwards became their asylum. Few women ever crossed the Allegheny
Mountains with more firm constitution until her death, there never was a
emetic entered her lips nor a lancet her veins. She was the mother of four
sons and three daughters. These obeyed the first commandment and married
wives and husbands and their children will follow the example of their
parents. Up to the time of her death there were 93 of the fourth
generation, making in all a posterity of 491. She was enrolled a member of
the German Presbyterian Church and continued such upwards of 60 years. She
was an affectionate mother, a good neighbor, kind an benevolent to all,
until nature gradually gave way and we trust she quietly reposes in rest.
      ---------------------------
While Rezin Franks was on a trip East with a drove of stock in
1839, he stopped at the old homestead in Fayette Co., Pa. for a few days,
and while there Mrs. Barbara Franks, his grandmother died.

      ANOTHER FRANKS FAMILY OBITUARY
Mrs. Barbara Hostetler died at her home in German Twp., Pa. on
Thursday morning January 28, she 81 years, 1 month and 26 days. This
excellent old lady was the mother of Daniel F. Hostetler who is her only
surviving son. The whole community attended her funeral on Friday the Last
at Jacobs Lutheran Church, of which she has bee a true and faithful member
from the days of youth. The occasion was one of far more than ordinary
interest to the people here as Mrs. Hostetler was a lineal descendant of
one of the first families that settled in this neighborhood. We have in our
possession an obituary of Mrs. Barbara Franks (Brandebery)-----she married
Jacob Franks. In one year after their marriage they started with four
families, in hope of finding a home in this western wilderness. They forded
the Potomic River at Cumberland, Mrs. Franks held her little child up at
arms length as she waded through the cold stream, and brought it over to
safety. At last, after a long and tiresome journey through the intervening
forest they selected a site for their little colony near Jacobs Lutheran
Church (where it now stands), and at once erected a blockhouse for their
comfort and the depredations of the Indians. This was the first white
settlement that was formed in German Twp. Jacob Franks, Michael Franks, a
Mr. Riffle and two others, five families in all. The first death in the
colony was a little girl, one year old, of Mr. Riffles. Its coffin was made
of clapboard, the little corpse was carried by Barbara Franks, who was
followed by the armed procession to a spot selected by them for the grave,
which is not in the enclosure of this beautiful cemetery and this was the
first interment. Year after year other generations of families settled here
and they erected a log house for a church and school about 1768-------etc.

      THE FRANKS FAMILY

The genealogy of the family can be traced back to the year 400 in France
and 750 in Germany. The first representative in America was Michael Franks,
who came from Germany about 1737 and settled in Pennsylvania at Uniontown,
Fayette County. His descendants are the Franks of Wayne Co., Ohio and other
counties of Ohio, and other States.
      ---------------------------
Dr. Lyman Adair, Wooster, Ohio, well known Wayne County physician, is a
direct descendant of Henry Franks Sr., who was captured by the Indians.
Christiania Franks, widow of Henry Sr., was the last of the Revolutionary
War pensioners living in Wayne County, Ohio. Dr. Adair's great grandfather
      was Abraham Franks.

      EARLY GEIB FAMILIES
      (Geipe, Gipe)

      -FIRST GENERATION
Johann Conrad Geib, wife and children resided in the village of
Bakenau in the Rhineland, Germany. It is recorded that in 1747 he was
released from vassalage. A vassel was a minor landowner who had sworn
fealty to a lord for a period of time. Very soon after his release he with
his wife and three children departed for America, via Rotterdam. They
sailed on the ship "Two Brothers" Thomas Arnott, Captain.
John Conrad Geib, wife Margaret, son John, daughter Margaret, and
another son, name unknown, arrived in Philadelphia on October 13, 1747.
There he subscribed to the Oath of Allegiance on that date. His signature
is clearly legible and available today in the old ship lists.

Christian Geib (above) is listed as having served in the War of 1812. (PA
      Archives, 6th Series, Vol. 7, page 412 -3rd Regiment - Christian Geipe,
second class.) Barbara Hoch, wife was the daughter of George Hoch of
Warwick Township, Lancaster County, PA and his first wife Elizabeth Smith,
whom he married August 6, 1783, Reformed Church, Lancaster. Said Elizabeth
was still living March 25, 1793 when her name appeared along with that of
her husband George Hoch on a deed of sale pertaining to land in Hempfield
Township. However, the said George Hoch named wife Catherine in his will of
1811, thus we many conclude that between 1793 and 1811 Elizabeth died and
George married 2nd one Catherine who lived until 1821.

George Hoch is recorded as a son of Hans Jerg Hoch and wife Anna
Barbara. Lutherans of Warwick Township in Lancaster County, PA. According
to record of Emanuel Lutheran Church of Brickerville, Warwick Township, a
son Johann George was born to them July 26, 1760 --this is certainly the
George Hoch of our record, and father of our Barbara.
By 1835 Christian Geib with wife Barbara and family of nine
children, most of them young adults, removed to Ohio where they purchased
land from the state of Ohio in what was then Richland County, but was taken
into Ashland County in 1846. They purchased 80 acres in Section 15 of
Milton Township and for it paid $220. This was in Virginia Military Lands.
There they resided at Paradise Hill and were buried on their own land.
Barbara lived only until 1839, and was survived by her husband
Christian who lived until June 15, 1851. However his estate was not settled
until 1857. It is this estate settlement which proved to be of great
genealogical value for it names th the same sons, daughters, and
sons-in-law listed in the family Bible, but for son Henry, listed in Bible
record, but not in estate settlement.
      -FOURTH GENERATION-
On September 24, 1857 in Ashland County, Ohio the estate of Christian Geipe
      was settled. The administrators were:
-Daniel Staely, husband of his daughters Nancy
-David Fike, husband of his niece Catherine.
This document includes a financial statement and then indicates a
distribution of personal estate to his heirs, namely:
      -Daniel Staely and Nancy Staely

SAMUEL GEIB b. April 3, 1810 Lancaster Co., Pa. son of Christian Geib and
wife Barbara Hoch m. Martha Harnley b. March 16, 1813 Lancaster Co., Pa.
daughter of Christian Harnley and wife Catherine Schneider d. February 1,
1871 Plymouth, Indiana. Samuel d. October 25, 1878 Plymouth, Indiana. They
married March 19, 1836 Richland County, Ohio by a minister of the Lutheran
Church. Resided Richland County, Ohio, Milton Township, which township was
      taken into Ashland County 1846.

In 1849 Samuel Geib, wife Martha and their eight children, ages
1-12, removed from Ashland County to Van Wert County, Ohio. They traveled
in a covered wagon, so crowded that only the four smallest could ride. The
children ages 8-12 walked beside the wagon. In Van Wert County they took up
land, built a house and furniture, did spinning and weaving, and produced
      their food.
In 1869 they removed to Marshall County, Indiana, resided 5 miles
west of Plymouth, attended the Dunkard Church. In Plymouth daughter
Catherine operated a dressmaking shop for some years after the Civil war.
She was an expert seamstress and employed at times eight women to assist in
the sewing by hand. Sewing machines were just coming into use and they were
cumbersome and not at all reliable.
In the Indiana home Martha lived only until February 1, 1871.
Samuel lived until October 25, 1878. Both are buried in the little old
cemetery on a hillside just south of the old Dunkard Church five miles west
      of Plymouth.

      THE WACHTEL FAMILY
      (Wachtell, Waughel, Wachel, Wauchel
Contributed by Mrs. Ryall Kimber, Wooster, OH

The name WACHTEL is German and translated it means "Raven". In Germany are
found villages and streets named Wachtel. In the early 17th Century, there
was a fine "Tenor singer" named Wachtel, who toured Europe giving concerts.

Jorg (George) Wachtel came to America from Germany on the ship,
"Priscilla" in 1750. He married Maria Barbara Breckli, the 30th of October,
1755, county of York, Windsor Twp., Penna. This record was found in the
records of the Canadochly German Lutheran Church. The record shows one son
Johannes on baptismal records. He was a soldier of the Revolutionary War
and served in the Militia of York County under Jacob Bieber's command. (PA
Arch. 6th Serv. Vol. 2, page 607). He is also found on tax list of that
county. In the same church records is found a Heinrich (Henry) Wachtel and
wife Catharina with son Johann George Wachtel born March 6, 1795. Is this
Heinrich a brother or son of Jorg Wachtel, the Rev. soldier?
Heinrich Wachtel and Catharina left Pennsylvania and are found in
the Augusta County, VA court records. They had a son Jacob born 1799 in
Virginia. He came to the Wayne-Ashland area about 1820 and married Mary
Loop in 1821 in Ashland County, Ohio. He had three children by this
marriage: Jacob Jr., Catherine and Henry. He married 2nd to Elizabeth
(Riddle) Patterson, daughter of George Riddle, of Scotch Irish descent and
wife Mary Polly Ayres, daughter of Mosses Ayers. Moses Ayers of Welsh
descent was a Revolutionary soldier of Washington County, Maryland.
George Riddle died in 1803 in Maryland and buried on Crow's Island.
His wife died in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. They had: Jane who married
      Richard Rhamy; Elizabeth who married 1st Mr. Patterson; 2nd Jacob Wachtel;
      Michael married Barbara Ann Franks; Moses married Polly Ball of Maryland;
Dorcas married W. Jones; Samuel married Nancy Swick; Polly married Moses Stough.
Jacob Wachtel died in Ashland County, Ohio in 1840. He and wife,
Elizabeth Riddle had twins born in 1834, Elizabeth Ellen and John Rigdon
Wachtel. The brother George Wachtel born in 1795 in Pennsylvania came to
Fairfield County, Ohio and served in the War of 1812 from that county. He
had wife Mary ____? born in Maryland. Their first son Henry was born in
Pennsylvania in 1820; Mary, Margaret, Abram, William and George were born
in Holmes County, Washington Twp., Ohio. George Wachtel died in 1866 and
buried in Washington Twp., Holmes County, Ohio.
George and Jacob Wachtel were brothers. In Jacob's will found in
Wayne Co. court house, 1840, his son Jacob Jr. to be put in care of his
Uncle George, at this death. George's address Wayne county but in 1842 it
was Holmes County. Jacob and George went from Pennsylvania to Maryland to
Virginia, then to Wayne County, Ohio in 1820.

      after 1813.
About 1826 Henry divided his property between his children, and he
died without a Will in 1834. His widow petitioned the court for her share
of his property and on October 30, 1835 the sheriff of Harrison County was
directed to summon the heirs. The case was settled in April 9, 1836 term of
court, with the widow receiving her dower.

      WHITNEY FAMILY OF OH
Contributed by Mrs. H.W. Woodruff, Springfield, MO

JOEL WHITNEY was born in Harvard, Mass. on October 15, 1762. He
died February 1, 1842 in Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire. Joel was the son of
Jonas Whitney and his wife Zebudah Davis of Harvard, Mass. He is the
great-great grandson of John Whitney and his wife Elinor of England who
settled in Watertown, Mass. in 1635. His record is to be found in Whitney
Genealogy by Frederick Clifton Pierce, 1895.
Joel married Lydia Willard in Ringe, N.H., on December 7, 1786.
(certification of town clerk in 1851, pension application) Lydia gives the
added information that the ceremony was performed by Rev. Seth Payson; and
Pierce says that Lydia was a member of Rev. Payson's family. Pierce
describes Lydia as "smart, intelligent, active and unusually neat...she was
a devout Christian and the marriage was a happy one." Lydia died near
Lamoille, Illinois in Bureau County on January 8, 1856. (pension, Pierce)
Joel Whitney served in the army during the Revolutionary War in
Mass. Continental Line, and during the latter part of his life drew a
pension. He says that he enlisted, along with his brother Solomon at West
Point in July 1780 and served for six months in Col. Bradford's 30th
Regiment. He was stationed at West Point. A statement from Solomon Whitney
who also served int the War of 1812, verifies the service.
Joel gives his birthplace as Harvard, Mass., and that he lived
there until after the War. Then he moved to Ringe, N.H., and later to
Fitzwilliam, N.H. Pierce says of Joel, "those who knew him say his word was
      as good as his bond."

After the death of her husband, Lydia moved into the new territory
of Illinois, in Bureau Co., near Lamoille, according to her pension
application. In the 1850 census she is found living in the home of her
daughter Mary (Greta) Morse, the wife of Benjamin B. Morse. (1850 Census
      Bureau Co., ,Ill. p. 199)

You will note that except for Joel and Jesse who migrated to Ohio, the
other boys died young, without heir. Our line continued through Jesse Whitney.

      JESSE WHITNEY was born in Fitzwilliam, N.H. on November 8, 1794. (Pierce;
1840 Census Hancock Co., Ohio). Jesse died in Hancock Co., Findlay Twp.
about 1849. (relation to age of youngest child; inventory and appraisement,

Martha was born in Ohio in 1807. (1850-60 Census, Hancock Co., Ohio). She

Jesse Whitney bought one hundred sixty acres of land in township
No. 1, Hancock Co. on November 2, 1831 for six hundred dollars. The family
first appeared in the 1840 census with four sons and four daughters. Not
known where the family lived prior to their coming to Hancock County.
Jesse died about 1849 and in the 1850 census his widow's property
was assessed at $4,500.00 which was considerable at that time. By 1860 her
holdings had dwindled to $1,075.00 and her occupation was given as that of
      a "weaver."

      SOLOMON LEONARD DESCENDANTS
      MAYFLOWER SOCIETY ELIGIBILITY

Descendant of Solomon Leonard are now eligible for the Society of Mayflower
Descendants, according to a recent decision of the Society accepting the
lineage of his wife Mary Chandler as the daughter of Roger Chandler and
Isabella Chilton. Isabella was the daughter of James Chilton, Pilgrim.

Among Ohio pioneers of the Leonard family were the following who settled in
      Medina County, Ohio:

      TRUMAN LEONARD (6) (Ezra (5), Nathan (4), Samuel (3), Samuel (2),
Solomon (1)) was born in Worthington, Mass. March 23, 1784; m. June 1,

Lemuel and Rebecca (Davis) Allis.) They resided in Pittsfield, Mass. for a
short time, then removed to Middlesex (afterwards called Pottertown),
Ontario Co., N.Y. In 1835, they removed to Chatham, Median County, Ohio,
where Mr. Leonard bought a large farm and reclaimed it from the wilderness.
he was twice drafted in the War of 1812; the first time providing a
substitute, but after the second draft going himself and being engaged in
      the campaign in northern New York. He died in Chatham, February 24, 1846;

      Franklin, Harriet, Louisa and Sarah.
Truman was the eldest son of Ezra Leonard who removed to Ohio
probably before 1812 and made his home with his youngest son, Marvin, in
Williamsfield. He was the first deacon in the First Congregational Church
in Wayne and was elected one of the county commissioners in 1816.
EBENEZER LEONARD was born September 7, 1813; married February 12,
1837 Elizabeth P. Wetherbee in Chatham, Medina Co., Ohio, daughter of
Timothy and Betsy (Kendall) Wetherbee. At the age of 21 he emigrated to
Ohio, settling eventually in Chatham, to which place he was followed by his
father and the remainder of his family. Here he resided on a portion of a
farm owned by his father until the death of the latter, when he purchased
the whole and here he continued to reside until 1860 when he removed to
another farm in the same town, which he sold 12 years later to his son
Prentiss and removed to Cazenovia, Kent Co., Michigan, where he died March
23, 1894; his widow survived him. Their children were: Levi, Mary
Elizabeth, Ezra Marvin, Helen, Prentiss, Sarah, Bradford, Huldah and Ella.

NOTES FOR A TOURJEE FAMILY GENEALOGY
Contributed by Dean H. Keller, Kent, Ohio

Mr. Keller, of Kent State University has been cataloging the Albion
      W. Tourgee Papers and when he came upon these notes he felt they should be
brought to the attention of people especially interested in genealogy.
There are among the Tourgee letters several references to genealogical
matters. Of special interest are some of the letters to Albion W. Tourgee
from Eben Tourjee, a founder of the New England Conservatory of Music,
confirming their relationship. These genealogical notes may have been
copied from the Tourjee family Bible, but the whereabouts of the Bible is
unknown. In any case, these notes give us an accurate, if brief, account of
part of the Tourjee family, some of whom came from Massachusetts to settle
in Northwestern Ohio in the early part of the 19th Century. Of special
interest is the fact that one of the members of the family, Albion Winegar
Tourgee (he used this spelling throughout his life) became a well known
novelist and political writer. He was born in 1838 in Williamsfield, Ohio.
He studied at the Kingsville, Ohio, Academy and at the University of
Rochester. He served in the Civil War and later settled in Greensboro, N.C.
Later he returned to the North and settled in Maysville, N.Y. President
McKinley appointed him United State Consul at Bordeaux, France. He died in
      France on May 21, 1905.

These pages of the Tourjee genealogy are reproduced here as nearly as
possible as they appear in the manuscript. Spelling and punctuation and the
order of entry have not been changed. Any additions have been indicated by
      ( ) brackets.

other men near where the City of Philadelphia now stands. They were
returning from purchasing land where the City of Pittsburgh is now. The
